Talk: system summary
This page provides details on assignment 1-1.
It is assigned in week 1 and
due in week 2.
It is worth 50 points.
What you'll do: summarize a distributed system,
middleware service, or set of standards
What you'll get: 50 points, and a
little bit of public speaking experience
Specifics:
- Get the name of a system in class on Week 1
- Prepare a brief talk to give in class
- Maximum length: 3 minutes
- Visuals are optional
- If you want to use a visual, email a Powerpoint,
PDF, URL, or image file to the instructor before class
- You can also bring your visuals to class on a CD
- Most USB flash drives also seem to work
- You can download from your web
site
- If you want to use a floppy disk, you must also
bring a USB drive for it. The classroom PC does NOT have a floppy drive.

What to cover in your
summary:
- System or project name
- Is it a system, middleware, standards or some
combination?
- Problem(s) they are studying or trying to solve
- Remember to include transparency and/or
scalability goals, if you can find any
- Brief summary of their approach
- When to give your talk:
- In class in week 2, if possible
- If you are unable to attend week 2, you may give
your talk the next time you attend class.
- Please notify the instructor in advance if you
want to give a talk but you can't do it in week 2.
