 Welcome...

Welcome Students to this online session of ITEC495 - Information Technology Capstone

My name is Wayne Smith and it is my pleasure to be facilitating your learning over the next 15 weeks.

I would like, right of the top, to encourage all of you to check your Franklin email account and the course Announcements page for up to date information that will help you stay connected during these weeks.

Please review the latest announcement from myself outlining procedures for submitting assignments, as well as some other pertinent information related to this course and myself etc. If you ever have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask them. I will try to respond as best as I can.

Prior to the official class start date, you should be:

1) obtaining the class text book(s) (you will definitely need this; although this course utilizes a number of information sources, both the midterm and final exam is based on material in the text book)

Current ITEC495 Text Books –

A History Of Modern Computing (2nd Edition) – Ceruzzi

Ethics in Information Technology (2nd edition) – Reynolds

Please be sure each week to read all required readings and Module Key Points!

2) reviewing the assignment calendar and planning your study schedule

3) familiarizing yourself with the class website if you have not yet taken an online class at Franklin (Please contact the Franklin help desk or your SSA if you have any issues with the online classroom technologies)

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT FROM ME

1. Honesty and sincerity: without which nothing else matters

2. A commitment to supporting and engaging all students so they will be successful in this class

3. Speedy and hopefully satisfying answers to your questions and concerns

4. A desire to learn just as much from you as you will learn from me

5. Accessibility – to be as available as you need in order to be successful in this class

7. Fairness and integrity in terms of grades assigned and accommodation granted

WHAT I HOPE I CAN EXPECT FROM YOU

1. Academic Integrity in everything you submit; Make sure it is your work and that the work of others is appropriately cited! THIS IS CRITICALLY IMPORTANT! Franklin University and I myself strongly advise that you employ Turnitin.com to ensure that your work is indeed your work, and not the work of others.

2. Your 100% best effort 100% of the time

3. Assignments to be submitted on time, and completed according to the posted instructions (please ask questions before hand if you are in any way uncertain about what is expected with any deliverable assignment)

4. Written assignments to be university-level material; if you feel yourself weak in the literary arts, please avail yourself of all of the wonderful services offered by Franklin's Teaching and Learning Center. If the quality of your writing prohibits me from accessing the content within, then you may need some help

5. That all students will participate equally and productively in team assignments; that each team member will complete the peer evaluations honestly and fairly (I do indeed factor this in when determining individual grades)

ABOUT THIS CLASS

I encourage all of you to review the course syllabus and each module in entirety at the start of this class to get a sense of what is involved. Please be sure to allocate enough time to do the required and recommended reading. Assignments consist of individualized assignments and a capstone projects (done either individually or in teams). Additional forthcoming messages and announcements will provide further details on assignments so be sure to review that prior to starting your work!

To ensure that you receive the proper credit for your work please follow these guidelines:

While you are welcome to begin working on assignments at any time, please do not submit them before the official class start date.

Please follow all assignment instructions when submitting your work.

When using the class Bulletin Board, post to the correct Topic folder. If the needed Topic Folder has not been created yet, e-mail your professor for further instructions.

If you have never taken an online course at Franklin, I strongly encourage you to read the FAQ section found under the Overview menu on this course website. This area also has contact information for all of the Franklin resources you will need to be successful, such as the Teaching and Learning Center, Library and Help Desk!!!

HOW TO SUBMIT ASSIGNMENTS (PLEASE BE SURE TO READ THIS)

This class will be pilot testing a new online Assignment Dropbox for submitting assignments. Please refer to an announcement on this page for more details.

NOTE: I WILL NOT BE ACCEPTING ANY ASSIGNMENTS NOT SUBMITTED VIA THE DROPBOX!

It does a number of essential things to ensure fairness and deliverability: it bypasses all issues with spam and content filters, and it date and time stamps all submissions.

There is a late submission policy, and I follow it fairly rigidly. Reasonable accommodation will be made in select circumstances at the instructor's discretion. In this regard, you will definitely want to read and understand the policy found in the Overview section of the course website. I will grade assignments and post the grades to your grade book as soon as possible but will not take more than a week, since you are big class it might take close to a week to post your grades, please don't expect grades to be posted the very next day you turn in your assignment.

FEEDBACK ON SUBMITTED ASSIGNMENTS

If you have a question or concern regarding an assigned grade, please advise me immediately, so that I can respond to your concerns in a timely fashion. If it will prove helpful to you, I can also send you a copy of the paper in question with my comments and mark up included. As a rule, I do return a scanned PDF copy of graded exams, but not weekly assignments. Exceptions will be made in select circumstances.

SUBMISSION AND RETURN POLICY

Assignments must be submitted to the professor by 12:00 midnight on the due date indicated in the Course Schedule. The Assignment DropBox will automatically date and time stamp all submissions. Assignments may be accepted late but may receive a grade penalty based on the following chart:

Assignment submission date Maximum grade (% reduced, rounded down to next whole point)

Up to 1 week after due date - 25% reduction

More than one week after due date - No Credit

The professor, at his/her sole discretion, may choose to amend this policy in certain cases to accommodate extenuating circumstances. Assignments submitted for grading will be returned within one week of the due date.

CLOSING

In closing, please direct any questions you may have before the start of this course to myself, and also note the due date on Module 1 assignments. Again, I am fairly strict on adhering to due dates for deliverables, so please manage your time wisely so that you will be successful in this course. The Time Allocation Chart (under Instruction \ Schedule) on this course site can help you schedule your time effectively!

The very best of success and learning to all of you!

Thanks

Prof Smith
